WELCOME part 2

Danielle here:

I too would like to welcome you all to the new blog! I hope this will be a place for you, our readers and viewers, to share some of your favorite Central Coast Adventures and maybe even share some running advice with the two of us. Like Ryan said, I was very recently bitten by the running bug, or at least I’m trying to be “bitten.” About a month ago I embarked on my own Central Coast Adventure and decided to train for the City to Sea half marathon. The race is Sunday, October 11 and the course goes from San Luis Obispo to Shell Beach. Now for some of you more seasoned runners 13.1 miles may seem like a piece of cake. I’ve done two 5K races but honestly, the thought of getting my body to go that far without stopping seems pretty impossible. I literally started a few weeks ago with one mile. That’s right, just one, and I could barely even get through that. Now I’m proud to say I’m at 3 miles and working my way towards 4 miles. It will be a very slow and very steady process but I’m hoping the feeling of crossing that finish line will make it all worth while. I wanted to blog about my training experience for a variety of reasons. First of all, I’m depending on all of you to hold me accountable. Feel free to send me any comments or suggestions on how to increase my mileage without killing myself and pass along any of your running experiences too. I would love to hear how you trained for your 5K, 10K, half-marathon, whole-marathon, or just your general running and outdoor activity routines. The Central Coast is such a beautiful place to live and I’m always looking for new places to see and new things to experience. So welcome once again! I look forward to sharing my journey from the City to the Sea with all of you. 16 weeks and counting!

I used to time that race until it got too big for me. Its a pretty flat course but get some hill training too. Rolling vineyard hills makes a nice run.

Thanks for the comment! When you say hill training, how much hill training do you recommend and where is the best place to do it?

Another great opportunity to run/walk with others is on July 11 in Morro Bay. The “Morro Rock to (Cayucos) Pier” that takes place at low tide on the beach. I think it’s around 5 mi. Maybe we’ll see you there.

since your in SM, it might not be easy. I live in SLO so poly canyon and johnson rd are close by. And rolling hills will help you in your run, no need for intervals for 1/2 marathon training. Just try not to end on an uphill. running up and over and down a hill (called cresting) is also a good way during a run to throw in a surge.

I tend to split my time between SM and SLO most of the time so maybe I’ll give Poly Canyon a try. Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming!
